Intro

Happy New Year!

You will need 15 minutes and something to capture your thoughts to complete this assignment. This assignment is about playfully approaching yourself. #hopework #HopeworkSet6

Read through this exercise before doing it so you can learn what steps you’ll want to do.

There is no threaded version this week.

Step-by-step

1) Find a comfortable and safe place to sit or lay with your eyes closed.

2) Download the Smiling Mind app and create an account.

Google Play store or Apple App store

Create account

a. If you already have a Smiling Mind account, skip ahead.

b. Open the app. Go ahead and select Create My Free Account then Continue.

Side by side: Apple splash screen for Smiling Mind app and Continue screen for creating a new smiling mind account. It says: "SmilingMind" Wants to Use "smilingmind.com.au" to Sign In This allows the app and website to share information about you. There are two buttons, close and continue.

c. You can create an account with an email & password or by signing up via google, facebook, or apple.

A page which prompts you to enter an email and password to sign up. Next to it is the view once you scroll down: Screenshot that shows the option to sign up using Google, Facebook, or Apple ID for Apple users.

d. Select Continue then enter the name and year close to your birthday.

Side by side screenshots: A white woman with dark hair turns her face to the sun on this Continue screen that says: Ready to thrive? Smiling Mind's app is expanding from a mindfulness app into a full mental fitness toolkit. Mental fitness is our foundation for thriving. Here, you'll learn essential skills to support your wellbeing and build lifelong habits to navigate the ups and downs. The second screenshot of the account creation screen has you enter your name and birthdate and agree to terms and accept marketing emails.

e. Make any selection here. I do highly recommend sharing the app’s exercises with family. They are great as part of a bedtime or nap routine.

g. Welcome to the Smiling Mind app.

3) We will be using the Year 1 Classroom.

The Year 1 Classroom is for first year students but who doesn’t have an inner 7-year old somewhere inside of them? Let yourself (your younger self?) have this moment of fun. In fact, we will be using this app all month.

Here’s how to navigate to the Year 1 Classroom:

a. Scroll down and select Explore.

Home Screen of the app for Apple and Android, at the bottom left is the explore icon.

b. Scroll down to Content and select Classroom.

c. Select Year 1.

6) Take the remainder of your 15 minutes to write down a few sentences or words about your experience with this exercise.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What happened in your mind and body as you practiced the exercise?
  • How do you feel towards the exercise: more positive, more negative, or more neutral?
  • Is there someone you would like to share the exercise with? Why did you think of them?

After you finish writing, feel free to read what you wrote and add to it if you feel moved to do so.

Extra hopework: Try listening to Glowing Bubble Breathing once a day this week.
